What is an allergic reaction ?

An allergic reaction is triggered when the body responds to a foreign substance it comes in contact with. The substance may enter the body by breathing an airborne particle (such as pollen) or in the case of food allergens, by ingesting an offending substance. An allergic reaction occurs when your immune system over-reacts, thinking that the allergen is a toxic and potentially dangerous substance. Your body defends itself by releasing histamine, a chemical that causes any number of familiar symptoms, from sneezing, wheezing, coughing, watery eyes and congestion to rashes and upset stomach.
